Pineapple and Fernet Branca in an Old Fashioned? Thought that might get your attention.
Blueberries + Bourbon
I've taken to smashing a few blueberries in the bottom of a cocktail shaker, then adding bourbon, lemon and simple syrup, then giving it a good shake. Once the whole thing has been strained into a glass, I like to lighten it a with a bit of seltzer and a squeeze of lemon peel.
Man About Town
This cocktail from Gramercy Tavern in NYC is a take on a Boulevardier (which is like a Negroni, but with bourbon instead of gin). Here, however, spicy rye is the star, complemented by the bittersweet Sicilian amaro, Cynar.
Old Timber (Rye Cocktail With Fernet)
If you like Old Fashioneds, you'll enjoy this simple stirred cocktail, created by Gabe Cothes of San Francisco's Salt House. It's deeply woodsy, with added depth and aroma from fernet, an Italian amaro, and orangey triple sec.
Fleming's Blueberry Lemon Drop Martini
This refreshing twist on a classic cocktail hails from Fleming's Steakhouse. Their fruity Blueberry Lemon Drop Martini is perfect year round!
Blonde Redhead
This cocktail, created by Douglas Derrick of Ava Gene's in Portland, Oregon, is a masterful combination of just three ingredients: spicy whiskey, luscious vermouth, and complex Barolo Chinato, a bittersweet, herb- and spice-dosed digestivo made from one of Italy's best wines. The result is chocolaty, smooth, and deep. Though it's in the same family, it's subtler than a Boulevardier.
Basin Street Blues
This cocktail, adapted from Domenica in New Orleans, is pretty low in alcohol, but not at all low in flavor. It reminds us of caramel and lemon drops, with an essential smoky addition from a few drops of Scotch.
New Brunswick
This variation on the classic Brunswick cocktail from Ehren Ashkenazi of The Modern in NYC features fresh grapefruit juice along with rye whiskey. Ashkenazi uses Lillet Rouge to balance it out, but we like the richness of Carpano Antica sweet vermouth instead.
Blood and Sand
Scotch, orange, and sweet vermouth: An unlikely-sounding trio that come together flawlessly.
New Friend
This twist on the classic Old Pal cocktail uses lighter-flavored Aperol instead of Campari, and brings in bitter Cocchi Americano in the place of dry vermouth. It's an easy-drinking combination.
This riff on the classic King Cole cocktail subs in Hochstadter's Rock and Rye for the bourbon and simple syrup and increases the dose of Fernet Branca. Instead of an orange garnish, you'll add a little orange curaçao.

Browned Brussels With Maple Butter From 'Choosing Sides'
Brussels sprouts are a given on my Thanksgiving table, but I don't always give them much thought. Olive oil, salt, and a hot oven are my only requirements. While this method does produce pleasantly caramelized sprouts, it doesn't add much excitement to the table. This year, I'll take a cue from Tara Mataraza Desmond and toss my Brussels in brown butter and maple syrup as she does in her new cookbook, Choosing Sides.

Glazed Winter Vegetable Medley With Chestnuts and Caper Berries From 'Feast'
The final savory chapter in Sarah Copeland's new cookbook, Feast, focuses on a few larger, celebration-sized meals. These recipes take a bit longer to prepare than those in the rest of the book, requiring more attention to detail, but they're worth the time—think paella, vegetable tagine, and silky (bread crumb-free) eggplant parmesan. Her glazed winter vegetable medley is the centerpiece of the chapter.
